The historic Southbound Railroad Building at 300 S. Liberty St. in downtown Winston-Salem has been sold for $2.9 million to Spicy Rails LLC, an entity affiliated with local attorney Tom Brock. Meridian broker, Charlie H. Fulk, CCIM, represented the buyer and seller in this transaction. Built in 1913, this iconic structure originally served as the headquarters for the Winston-Salem Southbound Railway and holds the distinction of being the only surviving railroad structure in the area from before 1925. The building underwent a significant $3.5 million renovation into office spaces and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
The Southbound Railroad Building’s deep historical roots are now set to blend with a fresh, contemporary use. Tom Brock, in partnership with Scott PLLC, plans to open The Station at Salt & Sage, a restaurant and bar that will offer a Prohibition-themed dining experience with live jazz performances. The restaurant will feature 660 square feet of dining space and have a seating capacity for 60 guests, creating an intimate, lively atmosphere. The menu will showcase a fusion of raw seafood dishes and Japanese-style cuisine, making it a standout destination for food enthusiasts.
In total, the restaurant will occupy about one-third of the building, while additional space will be used for outdoor seating, perfect for enjoying drinks and meals in the fresh air. The new owners aim to preserve the building’s historical charm while also contributing to the strategic redevelopment of the surrounding area.
Remarkably, the building’s original construction cost in 1913 was $4 million, which is equivalent to an astounding $127 million in 2024 dollars. The building’s enduring significance not only highlights its architectural value but also its role in Winston-Salem’s economic development over the past century.
